As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, the Garland Health Department (GHD) has received reports of 43 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Garland residents, as well as two deaths. Two Garland cases have recovered, meaning at least 7 days have passed since symptom onset and the patient has been fever free with respiratory symptom improvement for 72 hours without medication. The City will update our posted case numbers each afternoon after 2 p.m. Check the Dallas County website for county-wide updates.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Garland’s Utility Customer Service Department has suspended disconnects for unpaid bills through the end of April. Beginning April 1, all account-related late fees will also be suspended. Customers who have been impacted by the pandemic may also request a deferment and extension related to paying their utility bill. It may also be possible to apply a portion of the utility deposit to an account provided the customer has a satisfactory pay history.
The emergency measures relate to both residential and commercial accounts with the City’s Utilities. These policy changes will be closely monitored and potentially modified if necessary as the pandemic crisis evolves. The City has also committed an additional $100,000 through its partnership with the Salvation Army, a community outlet where individuals and families in need can apply for utility payment assistance.
