When Rick Worland, then the head of the film department at SMU, attended he said that not all the films were necessarily good but that each had a spark of a filmmaker. Join us and celebrate our sparks this year.
We began in the IB program as a part of the pilot program for film. We were the first Fine Arts film class offered in a public school in Texas. We are now the only public high school in Texas offering a four-year narrative film program.
As of the fall of 2022, we have been educating, inspiring and celebrating students and the stories they tell through film for 18 years.
We are a program that is open to any student attending GHS.
Our students are taught all aspects of film production: scriptwriting, cinematography, lighting, sound engineering, and editing using industry-standard equipment and programs. They study the history of film and the nuances of directors, cinematography, lighting, sound, and editing. They make 16-20 films within the four-year program.
We are part of the Performing Arts Program, and Middle Years Program (MYP), and the second year receives dual credit.
Our IB test scores have been over the international average since inception.
We are associated with most of the prominent film festivals in Dallas and have a one-hour screening each year at USA Film Festival, the oldest festival in Dallas.
36% of our graduating seniors include film in their future studies and careers.
